War

Now it is confirmed, there will be more war. I pray to God that this war will not be as great and devastating as the previous war and that it will soon be over. But luckily things are going well for us Germans right now. It only took a few months for us to conquer Norway and Denmark. Right after that we also won over France. It is absolutely amazing that France has finally received what they deserve after the misery they exposed us to after the last war. But in the current situation it remains to be seen what happens next.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I read the newspaper for the coffee this morning. I was so surprised that the coffee sprayed out of my mouth right on to the newspaper when I read the title "Invasion of England failed, Luftwaffe defeated". So we have lost a battle for the first time in this war. Due to the large brown coffee stain on the newspaper, it was a bit difficult to read the rest of the article. But I could tell that Germany had lost to Britain in an aircraft war. I plan to ask my brother Fritz tomorrow when i visit him, he should have more information. He is, after all, a mechanic in the Luftwaffe.

We have had a couple of tough years, we are now also fighting against both the Sovjet Union and the US. We live in constant fear that Norheim will be bombed. Recently, Köln was bombed just 16 miles from here. It is so terrible Ture's brother, sister-in-law and their children was killed in the bombings, except the eldest son Klaus who studied in Berlin. He will now stay with us. It is so terrible because the bombs fall at night. We sleep with our clothes on and every night I make sure to prepare a basket of food and blankets in case we need to evacuate. We can't even feel safe in our own home. This war is probably lost soon.

It is now two months since the war ended. This is the second war in a row that we are losing. Now I am so very tired of war. I never thought I would say that, but I am grateful that the Allied came to our little town so that we didn't have to be occupied by the Red Army. I've heard so much about how the Russians treat the people of Berlin. Also our leader Hitler is dead. I heard on the radio that he took his own life. Which I think is incredibly cowardly.

I've been through a lot in my life but nothing has been as awful as what I saw today. This morning, American soldiers came to fetch us and many more from the city. They took us to a labor camp. There we saw how the Jews lived and died during the war. I have no words for what it was like there. I could hardly believe my eyes. People lay dead and naked in big piles, men, women and children. It smelled so bad that we almost fainted. I cried for them and I was shocked. Also I thought of Ture, after all, he has driven train transports to these hellish places. I can only imagine what visions he has seen. How can we recover from this?
